Хранение данных является важной функцией информационной системы и, даже сети. Это связано с тем, что потеря либо искажение данных при НеСанкционированном Доступе (НСД), отказе, катастрофе может иметь самые неприятные последствия. Поэтому в системах и сетях применяется множество технологий хранения и восстановления данных. Особый раздел хранения составляет технология автоматического сохранения данных во время их обработки.
Важнейшим аспектом хранения является резервирование данных. Оно достигается использованием дублирующих Запоминающих Устройств (ЗУ). Например, один и тот же важный файл может храниться на двух и даже трех Магнитных Дисках (МД). Для обеспечения резервирования используется иерархическая память.
Различают три режима хранения данных. Хранение в оперативном режиме требует использования постоянно доступных запоминающих устройств. Хранение в почти оперативном режиме основано на применении устройств, которые могут стать доступными автоматически. Например, при смене роботом Магнитной Ленты (МЛ). Наконец, хранение в автономном режиме подразумевает использование устройств, носители данных в которые вставляются вручную.
Хранение данных необходимо во многих процессах, например при архивировании данных. Временное хранение данных осуществляется с помощью регистров и буферов.
